Historical Society Meeting Minutes 10-6-2021

Attendance: DeeDee Tranfaglia, Elizabeth Whitham, Melissa Moore, Michele York, Lucy Gordon, Stanley Prescott, Roger Maxfield, Sandi Noel, Liz LeBrun

The meeting was called to order at 6:31 pm. Michele made a motion to accept the September meeting minutes as written. DeeDee seconded the motion. Minutes were accepted.

Lucy reported that we have spent $903 to date primarily on the new cabinet and computer desk. We still need a small table for the printer. We will keep the old desk for use in our area next door. We would like to thank Dyrace Maxfield for his time and effort in putting together the new desk and cabinet.

Melissa reported on some of the resources that she has used for the town history. She found an article on the charcoal kiln and has used ancestry.com for identification of blacksmiths. Tanners and carriage wagon shops will be researched at the archives. Melissa found the patent for the airplane wing designed by Perley Ordway. She has a December goal for finishing the current chapter. It was discussed whether we should buy a cassette player to be able to listen to all the oral histories. Sandi will look to see if she has one to donate. We should change those cassette recordings to DVD since the cassette tapes could be easily damaged. A newspaper article from 1954 was found seeking Loudon’s history. We should plan a big event for the book release.

The final draft for the traveling trunk grant application is ready to be sent. It was discussed that the $500 cash donation from the Historical Society should go toward acquisitions and office supplies as needed. Melissa has reached out to Dartmouth for a picture in their archives. Liz has reached out to Perley Ordway’s granddaughter and will contact Cale Marston’s granddaughter for pictures.

Discussion of an ornament for the 2023 celebration is tabled.

The Loudon Expo and Tree Lighting announcement did not get in the October Ledger. The room is reserved on the town calendar and Michele will put it on Facebook. We will have a bake sale as well. The tree lighting, singing, and fire department activities will begin at 4:30.

A fall cemetery tour for members will be October 17 at 1:00. It will include Mount Hope and Moore cemeteries and will be focused heavily on veterans.

Members should begin to set aside articles for a yard sale next summer.

Dyrace and Lucy did the State tax forms. The Federal forms are also done. Dyrace will do his civil war presentation for the Villages. Discussion as to whether the Historical Society should stay open for the winter. It was decided we will maintain the same schedule and it should be posted on a sign. Someone donated MVHS yearbooks to the town office and they are now here at the Historical Society.

The next meeting will be November 3 at 6:30 pm. Roger made a motion to adjourn and Stanley seconded. Meeting adjourned at 7:35
